Painting Instructions
The materials and color tones of the apartment have been carefully selected, so to ensure the quality and living experience, decorative painting of the walls is not allowed.
If the walls have marks beyond normal wear and tear, for example from heavy fixtures like a TV or wall shelf, any holes must be patched and the entire wall repainted according to these instructions.
We recommend using a professional painter to ensure a high-quality and even result. For DIY painters, it might come as a surprise that, for instance, a paint stain on the ceiling could require repainting the entire ceiling, which can be expensive. If you are confident in your painting skills, we’ve compiled instructions below to guide you through the process.
When painting a wall surface, always paint the entire wall uniformly and be especially careful not to get paint on the ceiling. Painting ceilings, fixed furnishings, trims, and doors is prohibited.
Before starting
Set aside enough paint to cover the painted surfaces with two coats. On average, one liter of paint covers about 10 m². Note that the wall must be painted in its original shade, which you can confirm by asking your property manager. Favor environmentally labeled paints with emission class M1 and a matte or semi-matte finish.
Ensure you have the necessary tools: a high-quality roller, edger, brush, sufficient protective coverings, and a work light.
Read the instructions for all paints and other products you will be using.
Protect the surroundings of the painting area, such as floors, trims, and fixed furnishings.
Remove the covers from electrical outlets and light switches.
Wash the paint roller before use.
Mix the paint thoroughly.
Preparation
Remove any plugs and fixtures.
Wipe the wall surface of dust and dirt, and let dry.
Fill dents, holes, and cracks with appropriate filler.
Sand the patched areas carefully.
Prime the patched areas.
Ensure surfaces are clean and that paint is dry.
Painting
Mask off the wall to be painted with painter’s tape and begin painting the edges using an edger.
After edging, paint the rest of the wall surface with a roller.
Finish the painted surface by rolling the area from bottom to top to ensure an even finish.
Remove any painter’s tape immediately after finishing, as the paint dries quickly and the tape can stick firmly.
After painting
Once the paint has dried, reattach the covers to outlets and light switches.
Dispose of empty paint cans in metal recycling and any leftover paint at a hazardous waste collection point.
If the walls show more wear and tear or fixtures than usual, the wall will be restored by the landlord after your move-out, and the costs will be billed to you afterward. To avoid such charges, you should restore the walls before moving out. However, you may leave a few neat nails, picture hooks, or similar fixtures in place, which may be useful for the next resident.
