How do I recycle properly?

Recycling Instructions Littering and recycling challenges are unfortunately common issues in many housing communities. Litter negatively affects everyone’s living comfort, which is why it’s important that all residents sort their waste properly. Environmental friendliness is one of Juli’s core values, and therefore we provide comprehensive recycling opportunities at all our properties. You’ll find collection bins for mixed/general waste, biowaste, plastic, cardboard, metal, glass, and paper at each location. Let’s go through each waste type in more detail so you’ll have the necessary knowledge to recycle everyday waste and help reduce its environmental impact.

Mixed Waste The goal is to produce as little mixed waste as possible from otherwise recyclable materials. Mixed waste includes cigarette butts, snus and nicotine products, diapers and hygiene items, broken glass or ceramic dishes, cat litter, worn-out underwear and accessories, balloons, colored gift wrap, and broken toys. Unfortunately, mixed waste bins often fill up too quickly with items that don’t belong there, leading to overflowing bins. The best way to prevent this is to carefully sort your waste into the correct bins!

Biowaste Biowaste includes all compostable material, such as napkins, tissues, paper towels, coffee filters, food scraps, eggshells, and small amounts of soil from houseplants. Biowaste is processed for reuse, for example as biofuel for transportation.

Plastic Plastic collection includes all food and detergent packaging. Keep in mind that plastic toys, rubber, sleds, and shovels belong in mixed waste. Recycled plastic is reused to make new household items, shopping bags, flower pots, scissor handles, and much more.

Cardboard Cardboard includes milk, cream, and juice cartons, yogurt and quark containers, cardboard boxes, and other paperboard-based materials. Recycled cardboard is baled at sorting facilities and sent to cardboard factories to be processed into products like toilet paper rolls and paper towel tubes.

Glass Only glass from food packaging and bottles should go into the glass bin. If a drinking glass or mirror breaks, they belong in mixed waste. Be sure to wrap broken glass or mirrors well to avoid injury.

Metal The metal collection includes all metal cans and containers, foil, jar lids, bag clips, and aluminum tealight holders. Small metal items like screws, nails, and bits of wire also belong in metal recycling. Please note that batteries should not be disposed of here—they require separate collection and should have their terminals taped.

Paper Paper recycling includes advertisements, envelopes, drawing paper, and newspapers. Please note that gift wrap does not belong in paper recycling—it should go in mixed waste. Recycled paper is reused to make products like newsprint.

Recycling Electrical Devices, Batteries, and Chargers Electrical appliances, batteries, and chargers must not be disposed of at the housing community's waste station—they require separate collection. Search for “SER keräys + your location” to find the nearest electronic waste drop-off point.

Recycling Large Items and Furniture Please remember that broken furniture and home appliances do not belong in the mixed waste bin. These should be taken to your local recycling or waste station. Usable furniture and clothing should be donated to local recycling centers or charity shops.

Let’s Make a Difference Together! If a collection bin is full, do not overfill it—use a less full bin instead. If no empty bin is available, report the issue to maintenance and the property manager via Oma Juli. Mixed waste bins are often the ones that overflow, even though very little should go into them when waste is sorted correctly. Reducing mixed waste significantly increases the reuse of materials and benefits the climate—less incinerated waste means a happier planet.

Thank you for sorting your waste and caring about our shared environment! <3
